Doncaster College

The architectural design concept behind this project was to create a 'cloud like structure' within Doncaster College's main lecture theatre.

The Litestructures installation consists of 26 'D' shaped frames which hang from a truss support structure which is itself bolted to the theatre's steel 'I' beams. Each frame has a special track applied to its front edge, allowing the attachment of a stretched plastic membrane which creates the desired 'cloud' effect. Overall, the structure is approximately 22m long x 15m wide. The tallest of the 'D' frames is 6m high. The 'cloud' is set 2,5m above the ground. Suspended around the structure is a horseshoe truss rig which holds 12 state-of-the-art colour changing luminaires.

By night, the structure is awash with constantly changing colour, making it a focal feature both inside and outside the college.
