Bankers respect solidity but, today, they also embrace style. For HBOS, we were asked to design a 'solid' goalpost structure. The required look was sleek and minimalist, with no visible means of securing. Additonally, all joints had to be waterproof to allow water run-off from a lip detail added into the main profile. The goalposts are fabricated from special, folded, 4mm aluminium plate, optimised to keep joints to a minimum. The joints themselves were not welded, but made using a high-tech bonding material of the type normally used to bond automotive chassis components together. This was the first time Litestructures had approached this technology. To create the 'no visible fixings' look, the building contractor created a wooden former to which we screwed long aluminium batons. The folded form was then bonded to the batons. Internal overlapping sections helped waterproof the joints, and the whole design sports a smooth powder-coated finish. Overall dimensions of this structure are approximately 4m high x 12m across.
