Spiral Staircase
The conversion of former textile mills and industrial premises into contemporary, urban living environments is currently one of the most active sectors in the world of property development. In one such recent initiative, in the city of Bradford, the developer asked Litestructures to design, manufacture and install some 40 modern spiral staircases which would harmonise with both the industrial heritage of the building and the modern feel of the accommodation. The Litestructures design team worked closely with site contractors and architects to fulfill this brief.
Litestructures designed a modular staircase system which could be rapidly made in large quantities and tailored to individual specifications and crucially, supplied and fitted as required in less than a day. After intensive development stages, full manufacture commenced in June 2003, an effort which saw all 40 units installed by August of the same year.
The design itself was based around standard left or right hand treads, built up on a central column and spaced to individual measurements depending upon the overall height required. All of the spirals featured a standard square landing, complete with a matching landing balustrade. A stylish feature of the spiral design, rarely seen in modular systems, was to create a continuous handrail in a single, unjointed piece. To meet the requirements of varied floorplans and room layouts, Litestructures had to produce matching variations to the staircases, including double tiered spirals, mid-landing spirals, and both left and right helical rotations.
Such was the success of this venture that Litestructures have now completed their fourth project with this developer, having produced around 140 spiral staircases.
